Pay attention! Borrowing money, costs money

Borrow money for a Study

Going back to school after your 30th birthday is fun and good for your career. But it also costs money, often thousands of euros per year. After your 30th birthday you are no longer entitled to student finance, usually your employer does not reimburse the study costs and not everyone has sufficient savings for a study. Fortunately, you can also borrow money for your studies cheaply and in a responsible manner . We are happy to list the options for you. Is the study abroad? You will then have to deal with additional costs for housing. What are your options then?

1. Lifelong learning credit

You can go to the government for a lifelong learning credit . This is an advantageous credit especially for adults aged 30 - 55 who are going to (re) study, comparable to the tuition fee credit of the student grant. The tuition fees for the 2020/2021 academic year are € 2143.-

This lifelong learning credit is available for people who are doing a full-time MBO education or who are following a full or part-time HBO or WO study. You cannot borrow more than you have to pay in tuition fees.

2. A Personal Loan

Do you need a loan for your studies in the short term or does your study not meet the requirements of the government? In addition to tuition fees, would you like to borrow extra for additional study costs or because you have to work less for your studies? Then you can opt for a Personal Loan

With a Personal Loan , you borrow the full amount that you need to pay the tuition fees and any additional costs in one go. You pay a fixed interest and the term is also fixed. So you know in advance exactly how much the loan will cost and when you will pay off the loan.

The big advantage of a Personal Loan is that your debt decreases a bit after each monthly payment. Moreover, you can always make extra repayments without penalty, so that you can go through life debt-free sooner.

TIPS borrow money for a study

  1. Studying to increase your career opportunities or out of personal interest? Take a good look at what the study can bring you in terms of your career or job opportunities. Are you going to study out of personal interest or to invest in yourself? Then check carefully whether the topic still interests you in 10 or 15 years' time. This is how long it takes to repay a loan. It would be a shame if your career prospects are disappointing or your interest diminishes while you still have to pay for your studies.
  2. Can the study be combined with work or family? A study takes an average of 2 to 6 years. That is quite a long period in which you want to be able to focus on getting the best out of your studies. Discuss with your employer and your home front (if any) whether your study plans are supported.
  3. Repaying a student loan takes 10 to 15 years, depending on the type of loan. It is therefore a good idea to estimate whether you can and want to bear these financial burdens.
With a Personal Loan you start immediately with the payment; with a lifelong learning credit, you only start paying off after your studies and you repay the loan in 15 years.
  4. Note: a loan counts towards a mortgage application. Are your studies and your career going well and do you want to buy your own home? With a loan for a study, keep in mind that you can probably borrow less for a home. This is because you have to pay off an amount every month and these charges are included in the calculation of your maximum mortgage.

Studying abroad

Are you considering taking a (additional) study abroad?

This study will deepen your current position and can create new opportunities for your career. You want to take this with both hands and look forward to studying in another country. But how will you pay for these - often high - costs? Because you not only have to pay the costs of the study, but also the costs of housing and living expenses. These costs are in addition to your fixed costs that you have in the Netherlands.

You cannot take out a lifelong learning credit for studying abroad. It is, however, possible to request a consumer credit in the form of a well-arranged Personal Loan.

Personal Loan for Study abroad

You are not eligible for student finance, DUO or any other credit especially for students. It is possible to take out a Personal Loan for the intended study abroad, accommodation on location and other costs. You borrow a fixed amount for all costs, with a fixed low interest rate and fixed term. With this amount you can pay all costs in one go and you have the security of a responsible loan.
