Hundreds of layoffs for Orange County employees at C&S Wholesale Grocers, Inc. began this month when the supermarket supplier itself lost a major customer.

Two of the company’s 33 statewide locations are currently in the Hudson Valley. C&S Wholesale Grocers’ layoffs of 244 employees at the Newburgh site began on October 1. Sixty employees accepted offers to move to another location, which could include the other regional office in Chester. The notice periods for 134 employees have been extended and will be implemented on a rolling schedule between October 24 and January 1, 2022.

The Newburgh warehouse at 1500 Corporate Boulevard will officially close on December 31, 2021. In its notice to New York State, it was stated that the closure was “due to the decision of one of their largest customers to move into a distribution model.”

The note refers to Ahold Delhaize, the parent company of Hannaford and Stop & Shop. The company announced that it would develop a self-distribution model over the next two years.

“We hate losing C&S Wholesale,” said Maureen Halahan, president of Orange County Partnership, an economic development agency. “You have been an integral part of our community for many, many years.”

Despite such a large number of people being laid off, she still sees her future brightly.

“Orange County is one job fair after another,” Halahan said. “Not just Orange County, it is a national problem that we are desperate to recruit.”

Halahan believes that anyone who wants to work can find another job quickly.

The property has been listed with a commercial real estate agent and, according to Halahan, has already aroused interest.

“There is this opportunity,” said Halahan. “New company, and the workforce is already there.”

Orange County is home to a number of large, high-hiring employers, including Amazon and Medline Industries in Middletown, where “skills can be crossed,” Halahan said.
