As PYMNTS found in the latest edition of the Cross-Border Retail Payments Tracker, almost half of the top 50 e-commerce sites now offer four or more languages.

This is happening as these companies recognize the potential of international trade and make changes to expand their reach.

As PYMNTS found in the latest edition of the Cross-Border Retail Payments Tracker, almost half of the top 50 e-commerce sites now offer four or more languages.

d Customers in four or more languages, enabling localized and native experiences for visitors in multiple countries and regions.

Sixteen of these websites attracted more than a fifth of their total traffic from cross-border visitors AliExpress, steam, Booking.com, Samsung and IKEA make up the top five e-commerce sites by international traffic.

And some of the major players in the e-commerce world – including corporations Apple, Samsung and bill — received more than 50% of their traffic from abroad.

The study posited that the pandemic was a major factor in the rise in multilingual shopping, as online consumers had more time to explore retailers from outside their country and those retailers made efforts to make those shoppers feel at home being.

Cross-border trade is booming in China

Also in this month’s tracker, cross-border trade in China rose more than 46% in the first quarter of last year. China is at the forefront of an international trade renaissance in Asia-Pacific, with some forecasts showing more than half of retail sales in China will be online by the end of the year.

Much of this growth is being fueled by the pandemic, which has moved more consumers online. Almost three-quarters of China’s population is online today, mostly on mobile devices. That’s 989 million people, or more than three times the population of the United States
