Store chains may be in decline due to the increased prevalence of online shopping, but data suggests that stores are still central to today’s retail world.
The latest rankings from the U.S. National Retail Federation (NRF) show that the largest companies in the industry will still boast thousands of physical stores in 2020.
David Marcotte of Kantar SVP Retail Insights, who provided the data for the NRF listing, said the industry will face changes and challenges for the foreseeable future.
He said News week: “2019 was the last boring year with boring predictions. 2020 was chaos, with new realities in business every week.
â2021 was more stable but with fewer items, fewer promotions and less investment in the store; buyers still don’t seem to care about the experience.
“2022 will be interesting as competition returns and M&A” [Mergers & Acquisitions] Really takes off, but with a very fragile supply chain that makes any decision dependent on having the product on hand before it binds itself to buyers. “
Marcotte warned that the pandemic may not be the only threat to retailers on the horizon.
“Everything in 2021 and 2022 will revolve around the fragile supply chain, in which every single part is so heavily stressed that every little malfunction brings the whole thing to a standstill.”
These are the retail chains with the most stores in the US in 2020.
