Telekom Malaysia (TM) announced that it has entered into Access Agreement (AA) with Digital Nasional Berhad for wholesale 5G services on October 30, 2022. This will allow the telecom giant to offer commercial 5G services to consumers.

The signing comes immediately after TM signed its Share Subscription Agreement (SSA) with DNB on October 7th. TM has a 20% stake in the 5G Single Wholesale Network along with YTL Communications (20%), Celcom (12.5%) and Digi (12.5%). The government will hold the remaining 35% stake along with a gold share.

TM recently unveiled Uni5G as its consumer 5G brand in preparation for commercial launch. With the access agreement signed, Unifi Mobile customers should be able to get 5G in DNB coverage areas very soon.

Pursuant to TM’s Bursa Announcement, the AA sets the terms for wholesale access beginning retrospectively from October 7, 2022 to a 10-year expiry date of October 6, 2032. DNB will provide the national 5G wholesale network product, which is a basic product in the DNB 5G access network. DNB’s 5G network is currently available in Klang Valley, Johor, Perak, Penang, Kelantan, Melaka and Negeri Sembilan.

As of Q3 2022, the network covers 33.2% of the 5G population coverage with a total of 1,915 sites nationwide. The aim is to reach 37.9% 5G population coverage by the end of this year and they have over 160 5G sites in East Malaysia that have yet to be switched on. By the end of 2024, DNB aims to cover 80% of the population.

According to TM, signing the AA demonstrates its commitment to creating long-term value for its stakeholders by leveraging 5G technology to deliver best-in-class connectivity, solutions and customer experiences. 5G will accelerate TM’s goal of providing Fixed-Mobile Convergence (FMC) and advanced digital solutions to meet the dynamic and evolving needs of communities, businesses, industry and the nation.

Currently, TM has 2.9 million fixed broadband subscribers in H1 2022 and believes that the delivery of 5G services will strengthen its position as the preferred partner in accelerating the rollout of FMC over 5G and fixed broadband services. It added that TM is well positioned to support the nation’s aspirations in the digital economy through its extensive network infrastructure, innovative products and services, and the upskilling and acquisition of technology talent.
