What credit rating do you need to qualify?

That The Capital One Venture Rewards Credit Card is one of several travel rewards credit cards offered by the issuer. For this particular card, the application page states that you must have excellent credit – according to Capital One, this means applicants must meet the following requirements:

  • You have never filed for bankruptcy or defaulted on a loan
  • You have not been 60 days past due on any credit card, medical bill or loan in the last year
  • You have had a loan or credit card with a credit limit greater than $5,000 for at least three years

If you’re wondering what specific credit history you need to qualify for this card, Capital One will not officially disclose that information. However, additional reports from personal finance websites such as The Points Guy and NerdWallet suggest applicants with good or excellent credit may still qualify. Since FICO considers scores between 670 and 739 to be good credit scores, this likely means applicants must have a credit score of at least 670 to qualify.

FICO Score Ranges:

  • Very poor: 300 to 579
  • Industrial fair: 580 to 669
  • Good: 670 to 739
  • Very good: 740 to 799
  • Excellent: 800 to 850

Of course, this does not mean that all applicants with a score above 670 will qualify or that those with a score below will be rejected, just that this is generally the score you should aim for in order to be considered eligible. If you’re not sure where you stand, Capital One offers consumers a pre-qualification tool so you can see which Capital One credit cards you qualify for.

Credit card issuers also consider other factors such as your annual income, the length of your credit history, and the number of credit cards you’ve recently applied for.

FICO Score Factors:

  • Payment history (35%) — If you made your previous payments on time
  • Amounts owed (30%) — Your credit utilization ratio, or the ratio of the amount of credit you’re using to the amount that’s been rolled over and owed in your accounts
  • Credit history length (15%) — The time you had credit
  • New Balance (10%) — How often you open new accounts
  • Credit mix (10%) — Whether you have different types of credit such as installment loans or revolving credit lines

To improve your chances, you should also limit the number of credit card applications you’ve submitted in the last few months. While nothing specific is mentioned on Capital One’s website, a number of personal finance websites, including Forbes Advisor, have reported that applicants are not approved for more than one Capital credit card every six months.

In addition, Capital One limits the number of personal credit cards consumers can have to two. In other words, if you already have two Capital One-branded credit cards, you probably won’t qualify for the Venture Rewards credit card, regardless of your credit rating.

In the event of a refusal, cardholders can call Capital One’s customer service department and attempt to negotiate your case for approval, although you may not be successful. It probably wouldn’t hurt to mention important details, such as extenuating circumstances that caused you to default on your previous payments or your past loyalty to Capital One.

bottom line

To qualify for the With the Capital One Venture Rewards Credit Card, you will likely need a good credit rating of at least 670, although a higher credit rating would only improve your chances of admission.

Additional reports from various personal finance blogs and websites also suggest that Capital One has strict rules on how many Capital One personal credit cards a person can have — and how many credit card applications you can submit in a six-month period.
